Weatherwise this was the best day of the trip and all we had planned was the long walk out. There were stunning views over Lochan Fada. The mountains with their fresh snowcaps standing out against the brown of the moorland and the blue of the sky. We continued our descending traverse to the end of Lochan Fada (why is this huge lake only a lochan?) and after exploring the start of the path to Gleann Bianasdail where the stream that flows down to Loch Maree has captured the outflow of Lochan Fada set off on the old outflow down Gleann na Muice.

An RAF hercules made a spectacular low flight over Lochan Fada, coming up from Fisherfield and making a sharp turn to port to fly out towards Loch Fannich. There are two small lochs here and it is hard to see from the map which way the water flows. We reckon that water is now flowing from loch an Sgeireach into Lochan Fada whilst water from Loch Gleann na Muice down the glen to Heights of Kinlochewe.

The path passes a ruined bothy by the lochs and becomes a track about halfway down so the last seven kilometers of our walk were easily graded if rather hard on the feet. We got back to the car at about 3.30 and headed back south via Glen Carron and then the Road to the Isles. We passed Loch Loyne just after sunset and had spectacular views of the hills of Knoydart and Glen Quoich to round off a memorable trip. Two days driving and three walking and only one Munro!
